In a story about the nation’s economic problems, The Brunswick Times Record’s Beth Brogan examines businesses on Maine Street and says that The Gelato Fiasco is “bucking the trend.” Part of the story is reprinted below from the January 15, 2009, issue of The Times Record.
Bucking the trend
At least one business on Maine Street, however, is flourishing despite the somewhat adverse weather conditions: “It’s nothing but blue skies here at the Gelato Fiasco,” co-owner Bruno Tropeano said Wednesday from the artisinal gelato shop at 74 Maine St. “We’re doing pretty well. The shop has been staying fairly steady and we’re increasing our wholesale distribution.”
The company’s gourmet gelato is now carried at Bow Street Market in Freeport; the West End Grocer, Micucci’s and Whole Foods in Portland; Black Cherry Provisions in Falmouth; and the A1 To Go Community Market & CafĂ© in Gardiner.
Sales have increased over last year, anywhere from 10 percent to 40 percent depending on the day, Tropeano said, noting that “whenever we get depressed about a particular day being slow, we go back to the books and see that on the second Tuesday of January last year – we’re beating those sales. That makes us feel better.”
