Some Notes about Operations
Our store revenue has suddenly vastly decreased as people have stayed home. Restaurant businesses like ours rely on weekly cashflow to make payroll, pay the rent, and buy supplies; we are not operating off venture capital or an investment reserve. Sales from the limited takeout operations above will support just one or two employees per store, and most of our team, including management, will be utilizing the emergency unemployment benefits implemented by the state of Maine. With the expectation that this crisis will last many weeks or months, our goal is to continue paying for our team’s health insurance program for the duration of the closure, assist with employees’ specific work situations when possible, and make essential payments so that we can reopen to full operations and rehire when the crisis subsides.

We’re grateful to Maine’s elected officials for taking emergency action this week, as this situation is hitting Maine’s restaurant and hospitality businesses and workers hard. More will be needed.

We appreciate all the customers who’ve checked in this week and made it a point to stock up or simply offer some kind words of support. Each and every take-out order, gift card purchase, or local delivery order really helps. And we’re eager to launch our Sustaining Subscriber program next week.

Our customers are facing a wide variety of health, social, workplace, and financial situations right now. Whether you decide to take gelato to-go, or choose to take a break for now and just follow along online, we hope that Gelato Fiasco can continue to be a bright spot in your day. We’ll be back in touch with another update next week.
